BOISE, Idaho -- Fresno State's men's tennis coach Luke Shields has been selected as a member of the 2020 induction class for the Boise State Athletics Hall of Fame, the school announced Thursday.Â
The fifth-year Bulldog head coach is being honored for his four-year career with the Broncos where he garnered nearly every award there was to gain. Starting with his 2004-05 freshman campaign, he began a streak of three-straight NCAA tournament appearances in singles play, along with four straight in doubles. By the end of his freshman year, he became he an All-American and was named the 2005 Western Athletic Conference Freshman of the Year. He went on to become the first three-time All-American in men's tennis at Boise State, and just the second tennis player in school history to earn All-America status in singles.
"I am humbled and honored to be inducted into the hall of fame at Boise State," Shields said. "I had an amazing experience there. The athletics department was really committed to the student-athletes. Our coaches were committed to us developing and making our experience the best it could be. My teammates were fantastic and we created a great atmosphere. We were all-in and committed to our program in every facet which led to sustained success."
Shields would go on to lead the Broncos to four-straight trips to the NCAA Tournament, and three-straight WAC Championships from 2005-07. In the WAC, Shields was a four-time all-academic honoree, earned four consecutive All-WAC first-team selections in singles and doubles play, and was the 2007 WAC Men's Tennis Player of the Year.
Â
The former Bronco still holds the school all-time records in both singles (118) and doubles wins (106).Â
