TAMPA, Fla. – The Fresno State softball team lost a 1-0 nail-biter in extra innings to No. 17 Michigan on Sunday afternoon in the USF Softball Stadium.
Hailey Dolcini started the game in the circle for Fresno State (3-2). Through five innings, Dolcini dished three strikeouts, allowed five hits and didn't give up a run. Danielle Lung entered the game for the fourth time this weekend in the sixth inning. Through three innings, she only allowed two hits, recorded three strikeouts and allowed one run.
Fresno State faced a tough Michigan pitching staff that logged 13 strikeouts between two pitchers. The Bulldogs recorded two hits in the game. Hayleigh Galvan smashed a double in top of the fourth to go 1-for-3 at the plate and McKenzie Wilson had a late single in the top of the eighth.
"I'm proud of how we played this weekend," head coach Linda Garza said. "Our staff worked hard on our game plans, our players were prepared and we were one hit away from being 5-0. There's something special about this group and we are eager to keep working to get better. Our pitching staff showed up this weekend and performed well. We had a plan in each game and our staff executed it well. There's plenty of season left to still play. I'm hopeful for what's ahead."
How it Happened
Michigan sent the first three Fresno State batters down in order. Dolcini was strong in the circle, too, and held Michigan without a hit for three innings.
Galvan recorded the first hit of the game with the fourth-inning double to left field. Alexandra Preston drew the Bulldogs' second walk of the game to get two runners on base, but a fly out to right field ended the inning - leaving the two runners stranded.
Michigan would also get its first hit in the fourth, a single. Schuylar Broussard made two catches and Preston caught a runner stealing ending the inning to keep the game scoreless.
The Wolverines retired six straight Fresno State batters, and attempted to take control of the game with back-to-back two-out singles in the bottom of the fifth. Miranda Rohleder halted Michigan's rally when she fielded a ground out to end the inning.
Lung took over the circle to start the sixth inning. She tossed two strikeouts for the final two outs of the inning, keeping the game tied 0-0 through six innings.
Preston drew a leadoff walk to get on base for the 'Dogs, but Michigan brought in a new pitcher and the next three batters were sent down in order. Fresno State's infield made three clutch defensive plays in the bottom of the seventh to chalk three quick outs to send the game into extra innings.
Adrianna Noriega put down a sacrifice bunt to move Alesia Denby to third base with one out for the Bulldogs. Wilson followed with a single, and quickly stole second base, but Denby held at third. Michigan struck out the next batter for the second out. Broussard hit a laser down the first base line, but the Michigan first baseman was able to get a mitt on it and make a big play for the Wolverines for the third out.
Lung walked the leadoff batter in the bottom of the eighth. With runners on first and second base, Lung struck out the next batter, and the second out was a fielder's choice to Haley Fuller and she got the out at third. Lung finished the inning with her third strikeout of the game.
Fresno State started the ninth with a runner on second in inning two of the international tie breaker rule, but didn't move the runner before a foul out was recorded. Broussard did advance to third on a wild pitch. After a strikeout for the second out, Rohleder walked and stole second, to give the 'Dogs runners on second and third with two outs, but Michigan recorded its 13th strikeout of the game to end the top of the inning.
Michigan grounded out to open the bottom of the ninth, and with the tie breaker runner at second base, the next batter sent a shot to center field to earn the walk-off win over the Bulldogs.
