Diamond 'Dogs staying sharp in summer leagues

FRESNO, Calif. - With the month of July winding down and the start of the fall semester only a few weeks away, a number of Diamond 'Dogs are staying sharp while competing in summer leagues.
While quite a few leagues across the country elected not to play games this summer due to the COVID-19 pandemic, five Bulldogs have been able to find action this summer.
Jake Harrell, Pitcher, Santa Barbara Foresters
After appearing in seven games on the mound for the Bulldogs as a freshman, including one start, in the COVID-19 shortened season this spring, Harrell is in action this summer for the Santa Barbara Foresters.
The Clovis native, who played at Sanger High School, has tossed 13 innings and struck out 23 while only walking one.
The Foresters enter Friday's action against the So Cal Giants with a 24-3 overall record and the team will play in the National Baseball Congress World Series in Wichita, Kan., next week starting on Aug. 4.
A double-elimination tournament, the NBC World Series will feature 13 teams from Kansas, Colorado, Texas, Mississippi and California.
Jamison Hill, Pitcher, San Diego Warriors
The junior right-handed pitcher from San Diego has appeared in six games on the mound while making two starts for the Warriors in the San Diego League.
Hill has posted a 1-2 record while tossing 10.1 innings and has struck out 12 while walking four. In a 4-2 win over the Hooks on July 21, Hill threw 2.2 innings allowing one hit, one run and struck out two.
In addition, Hill was 10 pitchers on Team Land that played against Team Sea in the San Diego League All-Star game on July 10.
The Warriors are 12-9 overall and wrap up the regular season against the Brewers on Friday afternoon before starting the playoffs on Monday. The San Diego League championship game is set for Aug. 8.
Zach Morgan, Catcher, Portland Pickles
After playing in 15 games and making 14 starts as redshirt freshman in the 'Dogs COVID-19 shortened season, Morgan is playing in Oregon this summer for the Portland Pickles.
Opening the season on July 11, Portland is off to a 5-3 start and the Pickles have six regular season games remaining closing out the regular season on Aug. 7.
Playing in seven games, Morgan is hitting .273 with six hits in 22 at-bats collecting four singles, a double, triple, scored a run and has driven in two RBIs.Â
Andrew Kachel, Infielder, Crystal Lake Cardinals
An All-Mountain West selection as a freshman after playing in all 16 games for the 'Dogs in the COVID-19 shortened season, Kachel is playing this summer in Illinois for the Crystal Lake Cardinals in the Metro Collegiate Baseball League and Chicago Suburban Baseball League.
The Gilroy native has played in 11 games hitting .375 with 15 hits in 40 at-bats and has registered a pair of doubles and home runs along with driving in eight RBIs and scored 13 runs.
He leads the team with four stolen bases and had a standout four hits on July 22 with a pair of extra-base knocks, four RBIs, two stolen bases and scored four runs in a 18-8 win over the Addison Braves.
The Cardinals have a 8-10 overall record and close out the regular season with a doubleheader on Saturday against the Oswego Cats.
Cooper Bergman, Pitcher, Crystal Lake Cardinals
After redshirting this past spring for the Bulldogs, Bergman is a teammate of Kachel on the Crystal Lake Cardinals.
Making two starts on the mound, the Clovis native has tossed seven innings allowing seven hits and seven earned runs while striking out 15.
