Maxwell Award adds Haener

PHILADELPHIA - Fresno State senior quarterback Jake Haener has been named one of 10 midseason additions to the Maxwell Award watch list, an award presented annually to the most outstanding player in college football, the Maxwell Football Club announced on Wednesday.

Haener, the FBS leader in passing yards, has gotten out to a strong start this season. Having thrown for 2,230 yards and 18 touchdowns, the senior Bulldog has turned heads early. Haener has led the Bulldogs to a 4-2 record with a key 40-37 win over then-No. 13 UCLA on the road. With no preseason recognitions, Haener's performances each week have earned him national attention including spots on the Davey O'Brien Award watch list and, now, the Maxwell Award watch list.

Haener is one of six quarterbacks listed on the final additions to the Maxwell Award watch list. The full list of midseason additions include Bryce Young (QB, Alabama), Kenneth Walker (RB, Michigan State), Tanner Mordecai (QB, SMU), Bailey Zappe (QB, Western Kentucky), Blake Corum (RB, Michigan), Sean Tucker (RB, Syracuse), TreVeyon Henderson (RB, Ohio State), Sean Clifford (QB, Penn State), and Sam Hartman (QB, Wake Forest).

Haener joins teammate Ronnie Rivers (RB) on the watch list for the 2021 Maxwell Award. The 2021 season is the first that Fresno State has had two players on the watch list for the award.

The marquee watch list has touted a Bulldog player three out of the last four seasons. Rivers also earned a spot on the watch list in 2020. Quarterback Marcus McMaryion was placed on the Maxwell Award watch list in 2018 and was narrowed in as one of 20 semifinalists for the award in late October that year. Prior to that selection, Derek Carr was the last Bulldog to earn a spot on the watch list, doing so in 2013.

Semifinalists for the Maxwell Award will be announced November 1, 2021, while the three finalists for the Maxwell Award will be unveiled November 22, 2021. The winner of the 2021 Maxwell Award will be announced as part of the ESPN Home Depot College Football Awards Show held on December 9, 2021. The formal presentation of the Maxwell Award will be made at the Maxwell Football Club Awards Gala hosted by Tropicana Hotel & Casino Atlantic City on March 11, 2022.
