
Bulldog offense stymied by Pilots

FRESNO, Calif. – Fresno State closed out its nonconference schedule on Monday afternoon, falling to Portland 67-50 at the Save Mart Center. The Bulldogs dropped to 4-7 on the year while the Pilots moved to 10-2.
Haley Cavinder led the 'Dogs with 17 points, 11 rebounds and eight assists. Portland saw four of its five starters reach double figures.
How It Happened
Fresno State came out going toe-to-toe with the size of the Pilots. Shooting an efficient 50 percent (8-of-16), the 'Dogs led 18-17 after the opening 10 minutes. Twelve of the Bulldogs' points in the period came in the paint, doubling Portland's total.
Through an 8-2 stretch in the first four-plus minutes of the second period, Fresno State gained its largest lead of the game at five, 26-21, with 5:31 on the clock. From that point the Pilots flipped the opening half, holding Fresno State to just one of their last 13 shots in the in the quarter as they went on an 11-0 run to go up 32-26 at the break. While Fresno State saw their advantage come in the paint in the first, Portland began getting the ball into the post where they scored 10 of their 15 points in the period.
The Pilots continued their run into the second with five unanswered. Portland built their lead up to as much as 14 in the quarter but Fresno State countered with 3-pointers from Amiee Book and Haley Cavinder during a 10-4 stretch to pull within eight at the end of the third, 50-42. Cavinder added a layup to open the fourth but the 'Dogs were held to one made field goal during their next 11 attempts. Portland countered by going 7-of-10 during a 15-3 run to put the game out of reach.

The Bulldogs return to the Save Mart Center on Dec. 28 to open conference play against UNLV. Tipoff is slated for 6 p.m. PT.

Team Notes
- Fresno State finished the nonconference season 4-7. The last time the 'Dogs were 4-7 to start the season was 2015. That year they finished second in the Mountain West with a 15-3 record.
- The Bulldogs scored 20-plus bench points for the fourth time this season with 23.
- Fresno State achieved its highest free-throw percentage (83%) since Nov. 23, against CSUN but the 'Dogs shot its second least attempts of the year with six.
- Haley Cavinder recorded her fourth double-double of the season (14th career) with 17 points and 11 rebounds.
- In addition to leading the team in scoring and rebounds, Haley Cavinder also had eight of the team's 12 assists.
- Hanna Cavinder and Wytalla Motta produced three steals apiece. Motta matched her career high with the total.
- Motta also grabbed a season-high seven rebounds.
