No. 11 Bulldogs split games with No. 12 UC Davis

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 11 Fresno State water polo team split its games with No. 12 UC Davis at the Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs pulled out a big 13-7 win in game one, but fell 10-7 in game two on the day. Fresno State moves to 4-4 on the season.

The Bulldogs held the advantage in shots in both games on the day, outshooting the Aggies 28-to-16 in game one and 34-to-23 in game two. The Bulldogs also won seven-of-eight sprints on Saturday.

Game 1
Fresno State was dominant right out of the gate in game one. The Bulldogs scored four goals from four different Bulldogs in the opening quarter. Emily Nicholson scored first with 7:22 remaining in the period. UC Davis answered with a score to tie things at one apiece, but the Bulldogs answered back with goals from Daphne Guevremont, Callie Woodruff and Kaitlin Howarth for a 4-1 lead through the first eight minutes.

The attack didn't stop in the second as Emily Diacono netted her first of the game to give the 'Dogs a 5-1 lead before the Aggies could score again with 6:25 left in the period. Woodruff responded with back-to-back goals for the 'Dogs to score her hat trick and put the 'Dogs up by five, 7-2. Howarth, Guevremont and Yesenia Preciado found the back of the net for the Bulldogs in the second period and Fresno State had a 10-3 lead through two.

For the first time in the game, UC Davis scored back-to-back goals to open the third quarter. Diacono responded with her second of the game while Nicolson followed up three minutes later to score the final goal of the quarter. The Bulldogs carried a comfortable 12-5 lead into the final quarter.

Diacono scored for her hat trick with 5:07 left in regulation. The Aggies closed out the game with a pair of goals to close Fresno State's advantage to six, 13-7.

Statistically, Claire Schade bolstered the team with one goal, three assists, one drawn exclusion and four steals. Goalkeepers Hope Stokes and Mackenzie Matheny shared time in the box with Stokes getting the start. Stokes recorded six saves and a steal in just under 30 minutes of play.

Game 2
The second game of the two-game meeting with UC Davis was a lot different than the first, up until the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs' offense was firing, but nothing seemed to fall into the cage. The first quarter was mellow as each team scored one goal. UC Davis started things off with a goal at the 4:17 mark and Schade scored the only goal for the 'Dogs with 25 seconds remaining in the period.

Howarth scored on a 5-meter penalty shot to give Fresno State a 2-1 lead, but it was quickly evened at the 4:13 mark of the second quarter. The score through two periods was 2-2.

The scoring picked up in the third as the Aggies outscored Fresno State 4-3 in the period to take a 6-5 lead into the final quarter. The Bulldog goals were scored by Isabella Sonkoly and Emily Nicholson. Nicholson picked up two in the quarter, including one at the 1:29 mark to tie the game at five each before UCD got the chance to score another.

The fourth quarter went the way of the Aggies as they scored four goals to Fresno State's two. Woodruff and Sienna Jagielski were the Bulldogs' goal-scorers in the final quarter.
