Fresno State won two of its three women's tennis matches during the opening week of the 2021 spring season.
FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State women's tennis team finished off a strong opening week with a 5-2 victory over the Sacramento State Hornets on Saturday afternoon at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center.
Fresno State (2-1) was led by competitive team and individual efforts throughout the week, including a perfect 3-0 week for Fresno State sophomore Cristina Flaquer at the No. 3 singles position. Flaquer won all three of her singles matches in straight sets.
On Friday, Flaquer beat BYU's Kara Lin (6-0, 6-3) in the Bulldogs' tightly-contested 4-1 loss to the BYU Cougars, which saw four of the six singles contests go three sets, and then defeated Sacramento State's Megan Tagaloa (6-2, 6-0) on Saturday. Earlier in the week, Flaquer opened the season with a win over Fresno Pacific's Alice Di Matteo (6-2, 6-2).
In Saturday's opening week finale, Fresno State won two of the three doubles competitions to capture the doubles point, and then took four of the six singles matches (Flaquer, Dalia Ahmed, Carolina Piferi & Carlotta Nonnis Marzano) from the Hornets.
Quote:
Denise Dy, Fresno State head coach
"It was exciting to finally be back on our home courts and compete again. This is the first time all of us have gotten together for a competition and felt that everyone was comfortable with one another. We fell short against a hard-fought BYU team, but we're looking forward to building from here.
