Bulldogs' defense stifles Wolf Pack in quarterfinals, 70-46

LAS VEGAS – Coming off back-to-back defeats to end the regular season, Fresno State came out on a mission Monday afternoon to get that taste out of its mouth. The Bulldogs' active defense held Nevada to 26.9 percent shooting in a 70-46 rout at the Thomas & Mack Center. The 46 points was a season-low for a Bulldog opponent this year.
Mountain West Player of the Year Haley Cavinder led all scorers with 17 points to go with nine rebounds. Aly Gamez chipped in 14 points on 4-of-6 shooting. Hanna Cavinder added 13 points, four assists and three steals. Off the bench, Bree Delaney gave the 'Dogs nine points and 10 rebounds.
Amaya West and Nia Alexander provided 15 points each for the Wolf Pack.
Key Stat
Holding a six-point lead after the first quarter, Fresno State held Nevada to 8-of-37 (21.6%) during the next 23 minutes. The 'Dogs outscored the Wolf Pack by 20 during the stretch.
How It Happened
Aided by six points from Haley Cavinder in the opening 100 seconds, Fresno State raced out to an 8-2 lead. Nevada countered with a 10-2 run to grab its first lead of the game at 12-10 less than seven minutes into the game. It was the last time the Wolf Pack would see the lead as the 'Dogs closed the first quarter with eight unanswered as Aly Gamez scored the final seven of the period.
Scoreless in the first, Hanna Cavinder got going the second with seven points. With the Bulldogs leading 24-16 with 5:23 on the clock, the sophomore jumpstarted a 9-0 spurt by dropping a 3-pointer from the top of the key. Fresno State led 33-20 at the half.
The Bulldogs posted two stretches of seven unanswered in the third, one early and one late. Keyed by Bree Delaney's second 3-pointer of the quarter, the 'Dogs closed the third on a with a 22-point lead after not allowing the Wolf Pack to score during the final three-and-a-half minutes. That advantage quickly grew two 27 less than two minutes into the fourth, the Bulldogs' largest lead of the day. Nevada pulled back to within 15 but a turnaround banked in 3-pointer with the shot clock winding down from Delaney ignited a 9-0 run to put the lead back into the 20s.
