FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team recorded its third shutout of the weekend to sweep the series against Nevada, defeating the Wolf Pack 2-0 on Sunday afternoon. The Bulldogs (30-7, 14-1 MW) have won 13 straight games and are in sole possession of first place in the Mountain West standings.
Senior Hailey Dolcini pitched a complete game strikeout, chalking nine strikeouts. She didn't give up a walk and only allowed two hits in the contest. Keahilele Mattson recorded her second home run of the series in game three. The freshman went 3-for-7 (.429) over the weekend with two home runs, two walks and a team-high two RBIs.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs took an early lead after Mattson hit a two-out no-doubter over the right field wall.
It was a pitching duel between Dolcini and Kendall Fritz through the next four frames. The Bulldogs would put the insurance run on the scoreboard in the bottom of the sixth inning. Kaitlyn Jennings belted a leadoff double to right field, and Hayleigh Galvan moved her to third with a perfectly executed sacrifice bunt. Vanessa Hernandez sent up a sacrifice fly to center field, plating the second run of the game.
The Bulldogs sent the Wolf Pack down in order in the seventh with a routine fly to center field and two strikeouts.
Fresno State recorded its sixth straight shutout and 13th straight victory. Dolcini notched her 13th straight shutout of the season and remains a perfect 9-0 in MW play. The senior has not recorded a loss since Feb. 21 when the Bulldogs fell then-No. 10 Oregon 2-1.
QUOTES
Interim Head Coach Jodie Cox
"To get a series sweep over Nevada is exciting. Nevada is a great team. They are sitting in third place right now in the conference standings. They don't get shutout and we were able to deal three shutouts this weekend. The Nevada pitcher did a phenomenal job today, but we were able to bring more runs across. Anytime we can get a conference sweep is huge, but it's even better to get one at home in front of the Red Wave." Â
WHAT'S NEXT
Fresno Stat will go on the road to face UNLV May 1-2.
