Bulldogs drop high-scoring contest to Pacific

FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs reached double-digits for the third time this season, but dropped a high-scoring contest, 14-10 to Pacific on Wednesday afternoon at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (7-14) battled back from a seven-rule deficit to get within two runs at 12-10 and brought the tying run to the plate in the bottom of the ninth, but were unable to score.
The Bulldogs blasted three home runs while totaling 10 hits in the game and also drew eight walks and were hit by three pitches.
Home runs by Andrew Kachel, EJ Andrews, Jr. and Mason Grotto accounted for five runs while the other five came on Kachel scoring on a wild pitch and back-to-back two-run RBI base hits by Vinny Bologna and Zach Presno in the seventh inning.
Eight different 'Dogs had at least one hit, seven scored at least one run and four drove in two RBIs apiece.
On the mound, right-hander Nik Cardinal made his third start of the season working three innings to match his season high. The Canadian allowed three hits, two runs, one earned and struck out two before the relief efforts of Cooper Bergman, Kyle Pruhsmeier, Ixan Henderson and Oscar Carvajal closed out the game.
Carvajal struck out six of the seven outs he recorded to match his career high set back on Feb. 17, 2018 against Michigan State.
How It Happened
A game that saw scoring in 10 different half-innings, Pacific (8-17) got the scoring started with an RBI single and the 'Dogs responded with a solo home run by Kachel (watch) to knot the game at one after one.
A wild pitch by Cardinal brought in one run in the third, but the Bulldogs answered back with three runs getting a two-run home run by Andrews, Jr. (watch) and Kachel scored on a wild pitch (watch) for a 4-2 lead.
A scoreless fourth gave way to the fifth where the Tigers exploded for eight runs to take a sizable 10-4 lead. An RBI double by Hunter Schilperoort in the sixth extended Pacific's lead to 11-4, but the Bulldogs refused to go away. A one-out two-run home run by Grotto, the first of his Bulldog career, got the comeback going bringing the 'Dogs with five heading to the seventh.
The Tigers scored on a wild pitch in the seventh, but the 'Dogs offense picked right back up where it left off in the sixth with four more runs in the seventh.
A leadoff single by Matt Ottino was followed by walks to Kachel and Ryan Higgins to load the bases for Bologna who laced a two-run RBI single (watch) to left field to cut the Tigers' lead to 12-8. After a pitching change for the Tigers, Presno kept the Bulldogs comeback charge in gear driving in two runs with an RBI double to left (watch) to get within a pair at 12-10.
A pair of bases-loaded walks for the Tigers in the ninth pushed their lead to 14-10. A walk by Dylan Johnson, a hit by pitch by Presno and a single by Zach Morgan loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame, but a strikeout and groundout ended the 'Dogs threat to tie the game.
