Ostrinski sixth after Day 1 of decathlon at MW Championships

CLOVIS, Calif. – Following the opening day of competition at the 2021 Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Fresno State freshman Garrett Ostrinski leads the Bulldogs' multis group as he sits in sixth in the decathlon with 3,449.
Opening with personal bests in his first three events, the freshman found himself in the back end of the standings. He closed well finishing in the top five in his final two events. Ostrinski finished fifth in the high jump with a clearance of 1.91m/6-3.25. His top finish of the day came in the 400 meters as he placed fourth, taking more than a second off his personal best, clocking a time of 50.99.
Kaitlynn Perez sits in 11th in the heptathlon with 2,559 points. The freshman's top event of the afternoon came in the high jump, placing fifth with a new personal best of 1.61m/5-3.25, clearing the height on her final attempt.
Day 2 of the championships resumes Friday at 10 a.m. with the final events of the multi-events. Field events begin at 3 p.m. PT with the women's hammer where the Bulldogs rank No. 3, 4 and 5 in the conference.
