COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – Following last week's Mountain West Outdoor Track & Field Championships, Fresno State landed three athletes on the All-Mountain West Team, the conference office announced Wednesday afternoon. Vanja Spaic made her third appearance while Hannah Chappell and Breanna Covington each made their first.
The All-MW selections are composed of the top-three finishers in each individual event and the top three relay teams at the MW championships.
On Saturday, Spaic became just the third athlete in MW history to win three javelin titles in a career. The native of Bosnia ended her MW championship career breaking her own facility record with a season-best throw of 52.31m/171-1 on her second attempt of the competition. It ranked as the third-best throw in meet history. Spaic finished the competition with four throws over 50 meters, including two over 52 meters, the first of the season for her beyond that mark.
The Bulldogs' first medal last week came from Hannah Chappell. The senior from Oakdale, Calif. became Fresno State's third MW champion in the hammer after steadily progressing through the competition, finishing the event with a new career mark of 63.09m/207-0. That throw moved Chappell up to third all-time at Fresno State.
Breanna Covington earned her first MW honor as the Bulldog triple jumper grabbed silver on Saturday with a mark of 12.77m/41-10.75. It was her second-best jump of the season. The Fresno native became the Bulldogs' highest-ever finisher in the event at the MW Championships. Her eight points helped her group to 14 total points, the program's most ever in the event at a MW championship meet.
