Bulldogs bounce back with 5-1 victory against UNLV

LAS VEGASÂ -- The Fresno State softball team bounced back after losing the first two games of the series, defeating UNLV 5-1 in the finale on Sunday afternoon in Eller Media Stadium.Â

Despite suffering their first series loss of conference play, the Bulldogs (31-9, 15-3 MW) remain at the top of the Mountain West standings. The Rebels (25-12, 17-4 MW) are currently in second place and it will be a race to the finish with the conference title and the league's automatic bid are still well within reach for both teams. Fresno State has six conference games left, while UNLV has just three left. UNLV will face the third-place team in Nevada, while Fresno State will face the fourth and fifth place team in San Diego State and Boise State.Â

HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Hayleigh Galvan reached base on a fielding error by the shortstop with one out. Keahilele Mattson hit a two-run bomb to center field for an early lead. Vanessa Hernandez made it back-to-back home runs with a solo shot right-center.

UNLV answered in the bottom half of the frame with a solo shot to left field, making it a 3-1 game.Â

After a scoreless second inning, Fresno State chalked two more runs in the top of the third to extend its lead. Mattson hit a leadoff single and Hernandez followed with a drawn walk to put two on the bases. Mattson and Hernandez advanced a base apiece off a passed ball to move into scoring positions. Adrianna Noriega brought in a run with an RBI groundout. Miranda Rohleder plated the final run of the game with a single to right field.Â

Hailey Dolcini and the defense held the Rebels scoreless for the remaining four innings to ensure the victory in the season finale. Dolcini pitched a complete game, finsihing with seven strikeouts.Â
