Fresno State sweeps doubleheader for series win over Boise State

FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State softball team swept the doubleheader against Boise State on Saturday afternoon in Margie Wright Diamond. The Bulldogs (33-9, 17-3 MW) defeated the Broncos (19-22, 10-10 MW) 7-0 in the first game before securing the series win with a 5-3 victory in game two.
Senior right-handed pitcher Hailey Dolcini pitched a complete game shutout in game one before coming in for the save in game two. She finished the day with 13 strikeouts. Dolcini only allowed two hits and didn't give up a walk. At the plate, Galvan went 3-for-7 (.429) and logged a team-high four RBIs.
GAME ONE – Dolcini set the tone by dishing five consecutive strikeouts to start the game.
The Bulldogs opened scoring in the bottom of the third. Keahilele Mattson and Adrianna Noriega got on base with singles. Mattson advanced to third on a groundout and then stole home on a wild pitch to plate the first run.
Fresno State brought another run across in the fourth, after Schuylar Broussard hit a leadoff single to start the inning and Hayleigh Galvan brought her in.
The Bulldogs busted the game open with a five-run inning in the fifth inning. Vanessa Hernandez hit a leadoff single to get the offense going. Noriega followed with an RBI double down the left field line. Alesia Denby kept the momentum going by beating out a fielder's choice and logging the RBI. Broussard recorded the second double of the inning to put runners in scoring position. Julianna Martinez singled to center field to plate another run. The Bulldogs would plate two more runs before the inning was over to take a 7-0 lead.
Dolcini and the defense held the Broncos without a run for the final two innings to record the 19th shutout of the season.
GAME TWO – Darianna Orme chalked the start for the Bulldogs in the circle.
Fresno State took a quick 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first frame. Kaitlyn Jennings hit a leadoff triple and Galvan brought her home with a sacrifice fly to right field. Hernandez hit a no-doubter over the left field fence for two runs.
The Bulldogs extended their lead 5-0 with a two-run second inning. Avery Lawley hit a leadoff single to open up the inning. Back-to-back singles from Jennings and Galvan would bring in the run. Hernandez hit an RBI groundout to plate the final run of the game.
Boise State made it a game with a three-run inning in the top of the fifth, cutting Fresno State's lead to two runs. Dolcini reentered the game in the sixth inning to shut down the Broncos and record her third save of the season.
Fresno State has an opportunity to clinch the 2021 Mountain West Championship tomorrow. If second-place UNLV loses to Nevada tomorrow and Fresno State wins, the Bulldogs will secure the title.
WHAT'S NEXT – Fresno State will play Boise State in the series finale tomorrow at 12 p.m. The Bulldogs will honor their seven seniors before the game.
