INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Fresno State track and field team earned five selections into the NCAA West Preliminary Round of the 2021 NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the national office announced Thursday. Bulldog athletes will compete in the West region which is hosted at E.B Cushing Stadium in College Station, Texas from May 26-29.
Vanja Spaic is the lone Fresno State athlete who has prior NCAA experience. The senior will make her third appearance since 2017, reaching the championships in her previous two. Fresno State's record holder in the javelin ranks No. 12 in the West heading into the prelims.
Breanna Covington will represent the 'Dogs in the triple jump. Leading a group that ranks in the top 10 in USTFCCCA's Event Squad Rankings, Covington sits 34th in the West after moving up to second all-time Fresno State earlier this season. The Fresno native is the first Bulldog to qualify for nationals in the triple jump since Regina Ollison in 2006.
Fresno State's hammer throwers represent the team's final three spots. Hannah Chappell, Amelia DiPaola and Tahj'nee Thurston have all landed personal bests during the last month which have moved them into program's top seven. Coming off a Mountain West title, Chappell ranks No. 20 in the West heading into prelims. DiPaola checks in at No. 41 and Thurston is No. 45.
While Texas A&M hosts the West Preliminary Round, North Florida hosts the East Preliminary Round. The qualifiers out of these two regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 9-12 in Eugene, Oregon at Hayward Field.
Coverage of the West Preliminary Round will be available on SECN+.
