Diamond 'Dogs thump Rebels on Senior Day

FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs closed out their home schedule on Sunday with a run-rule 12-2 victory over UNLV on Senior Day at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
Fresno State (19-23, 15-16 MW) exploded for 17 hits as a team in the series finale against the Rebels smacking four home runs and five additional extra-base hits to secure the series win.
Five Bulldogs notched multi-hit games with EJ Andrews, Jr. leading the way with a career-high four hits falling only a double shy of the cycle as he hit his eighth home run and first triple of the season (watch).
The junior from Long Beach added two RBI, scored three runs and ended the game with a walk-off sacrifice fly in the bottom of the seventh (watch).
Andrew Kachel, Ryan Higgins and Nate Thimjon all added home runs while Zach Presno and Matt Ottino each notched two hits apiece.
On the mound, freshman southpaw Ixan Henderson threw a season-high four innings allowing only three hits, one unearned run and struck out two before giving way to Kyle Pruhsmeier, Tommy Hopfe and Nik Cardinal who each threw one inning apiece to close out the game.
How It Happened
The 'Dogs got off to a quick start on Sunday scoring four runs in the first inning getting started with a RBI double by Higgins (watch) to left field that drove in Andrews, Jr. who led off with a triple to center. Presno kept the offense going with a RBI single to left (watch) and Mason Grotto drove in two more runs with a double to right (watch).
A pair of solo home runs by Andrews, Jr. (watch) and Higgins (watch)Â put the Bulldogs ahead 6-0 through two innings. The teams traded sacrifice flies in the fourth and the Rebels got as close as 7-2 with another sacrifice fly in the top of the fifth, but the 'Dogs responded with a two-run home run by Thimjon (watch) to take a 9-2 advantage.
Not done hitting long balls, Kachel smacked the 'Dogs fourth of the game in the sixth inning with a two-run bomb to left-center (watch) for an 11-2 lead and Andrews, Jr. closed out the game in the seventh with a sacrifice fly to give the 'Dogs the run-rule victory.
