Program announces team captains
FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State football team held its second and final scrimmage of fall camp inside Bulldog Stadium on Saturday morning. The Bulldogs are one Saturday closer to game day, and have worked through 14 practices in fall camp.
Â
Prior to Saturday's scrimmage, the Bulldogs announced their 2021 team captains in quarterback Jake Haener, running back Ronnie Rivers, defensive end David Perales and linebacker Tyson Maeva.
Â
The 'Dogs ran approximately 85 plays in the second scrimmage, with a continued focus on high energy and physical football.
"It wasn't just today, but the last few practices, we had become much more physical," said head coach Kalen DeBoer. "We had three days this week where we wore full pads – Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday. Today, I think it showed. I think our tackling was the best it has been. You can hear a good practice. If you just sit back there and close your eyes, you can hear whether it's a physical practice or not. I thought today was the most physical day we have had. I liked the energy that we brought as well, and that was a point that I challenged the guys with. I am really happy. The guys had fun out there, you can see the guys coming together. You can see the focus to do some special things."
Â
The Bulldog defense had another big day, showing progress and cohesiveness since scrimmage one. Defensive end Da'Marcus Johnson sparked some energy late in the scrimmage with a big interception, one play after freshman defensive back Cale Sanders Jr. grabbed an INT of his own. The 'Dog D piled on broken up passes, TFLs and sacks throughout the day.
Â
The Bulldogs' offensive unit remained explosive, again getting out chunk plays in the pass and run game. Haener, Logan Fife and Jaylen Henderson each got quarterback reps on Saturday. The trio scored at least once each with key passing touchdowns from Haener and Fife, and a big rushing score by Henderson.
