SAN DIEGO – Against conference leading San Diego State on the road, Fresno State held its own and frustrated the Mountain West's top offensive team, but a free kick in the 70th minute proved to be the difference in a 1-0 defeat for the Bulldogs on Sunday afternoon at the SDSU Sports Deck.
How It Happened
Fresno State was put under pressure during much of the opening half as San Diego State racked up eight shots and forced four saves out of Valentina Vivas. Two of those stops came within seconds of one another in the 28th minute as Vivas' quick reactions kept the Aztecs off the board.
The Bulldogs had their best chance of the afternoon in come late in the half. A Fresno State clearance that skipped through the midfield put Ciara Wilson in alone on goal. The speedy freshman took her shot at the top of the box, electing to go high against the Mountain West's saves leader, and Alexa Madueno got a glove on the attempt.
The 'Dogs had the better of the chances in the second half, outshooting the Aztecs 6-3 and continued catching SDSU offside.
The difference came in the 70th minute. A miss touch at the top of the Bulldogs' box was picked up by San Diego State's Olivia Sekimoto. The Aztec turned her back toward goal and went down, setting up a free kick from 20 yards. Trinity Coker stepped up and ripped her attempt off the underside of the crossbar to give the Aztecs the eventual game-winner.
