FRESNO, Calif. - Fresno State Athletics continued its year-long Centennial campaign today with a special recognition of the 36th annual National Girls and Women in Sports Day (NGWSD) and the announcement of additional details for its celebration of the 50th anniversary of Title IX.
Â
Since being passed on June 23, 1972, Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972, which aimed to protect people from discrimination based on sex in education programs or activities, has transformed college athletics. When written into law, many colleges offered few or no women's teams, and women made up just 15% of college athletes across the country. Now, 50 years later, over 200,000 women compete at the collegiate level.
"Over the last 50 years, so many girls and women have benefited from the passage of Title IX and the opportunities it has afforded in education and athletics," said Carrie Coll, Senior Associate Athletics Director, SWA. "I have incredible gratitude for the scores of women that have championed for equity and helped improve the experience for today's student-athletes. This milestone is a wonderful opportunity to share the history of Title IX so that we can continue to progress forward."
Fresno State Athletics will be recognizing this milestone at events throughout the year, beginning with the women's basketball game versus Wyoming on Saturday, February 12.
Â
The Bulldogs will continue the Title IX anniversary celebration with a digital campaign on its main athletics social media channels, as well as its individual women's team accounts. Educational opportunities for student-athletes and staff about the history and impact of Title IX will also be shared.
Â
To further support Fresno State women student-athletes on and off the field, The Bulldog Foundation is proudly stewarding a 50 for 50 campaign to secure scholarship support for female student-athletes. For more information, contact The Bulldog Foundation at 559-278-7160.
Â
Additionally, Fresno State is participating in the Mountain West Initiative Making Her Mark. Chosen and voted on by female student-athletes in the conference, the campaign aims to highlight and empower Mountain West female student-athletes.The social media hashtag #MakingHerMark will run through the remainder of the 2021-2022 academic year.
Â
The Bulldogs will host a Youth Clinic on Saturday, March 26 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m. at the Warmerdam Field on Fresno State's campus to share the benefits of participation in sports for girls and women. Participants will be able to interact with Bulldog female student-athletes and learn some fundamentals about the sports they play. Women's water polo, women's tennis and softball all have home contests that afternoon and youth clinic participants will have the opportunity to attend one or all three events. More information on the clinic will be announced at a later date.
Â
Fresno State Athletics annually welcomes back Bulldog student-athlete alumnae and this year, the event will be particularly special in honor of the 50th year of Title IX. A celebratory dinner will take place on Sunday, March 27th and current student-athletes will have a chance to meet some of the trailblazers that came before them.
