BOISE, Idaho – Behind 43 combined points from the Cavinder twins, 25 coming in the second half, Fresno State secured its second road win of Mountain West play, defeating Boise State 62-56 on Wednesday night at ExtraMile Arena. The win was the Bulldogs' first this season when scoring less than 70 points.
Haley Cavinder scored a game-high 28 points on 10-of-18 shooting, 4-of-7 from 3. Hanna Cavinder provided 15 points with 11 of those coming in the final 16-plus minutes. Abby Muse (12 points, 15 rebounds) and Trista Hull (11 points, 10 rebounds) each posted double-doubles for the Broncos.
Outrebounded by 16 by the No. 2 rebounding team in the conference, Fresno State overcame an 18-4 deficit on second-chance points by being plus-16 from the 3-point line.
How It Happened
With just under four minutes to go in the second, and trailing 17-16, Haley Cavinder knocked down her first 3-pointer of the night. A miss from the corner at the other end from Anna Ostlie, and the Bulldogs were off to the races and Hanna Cavinder hit Haley on the wing to put the 'Dogs up five and force a timeout from the Broncos.
Two minutes later, a triple at the top of the key from Charisse Fairley gave Fresno State its largest lead of the half at six, 25-19, with 1:49 remaining in the half. Leading by three at the half, Fresno State continued to feed the hot hand in the third. After 12 points on 4-of-4 shooting in the second, Haley knocked down her first four shots in the third (9 points) as the Bulldogs took the largest of the game at 41-31 with 4:27 on the clock.
Boise State wouldn't go away quietly. The Broncos closed the third with a 7-3 stretch to cut into their deficit. Following a layup from Wytalla Motta, Boise State made three shots to pull within two and force a timeout from Fresno State with 7:57 to play.
The Bulldogs though managed to maintain its lead despite the Broncos continuing to put pressure on them. With the 'Dogs clinging to a 55-54 lead, Hanna came up with a loose ball off a Boise State missed attempt. Fouled on the play, the junior sank both free throws at the other end. With under 90 seconds to go, following a Trista Hull free throw to cut the Bulldogs' lead to three, Hanna got a floater to die on the back of the rim and fall in with the shot clock expiring to put the 'Dogs up 59-54.
Another split at the line from the Broncos and the Bulldogs answered with three free throws of their own to close out the game.
Team Notes
The Bulldogs continue their road swing, traveling up to Reno to face Nevada on Saturday. Tipoff at Lawlor Events Center is scheduled for 2 p.m. PT.
