Pipion leads 'Dogs in SLO

SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – In its final meet away from Fresno before hosting next week's West Coast Relays, the Fresno State track and field teams racked up six wins this weekend at the Cal Poly Invitational, led by Ceonna Pipion who totaled three. The sophomore won both the 200 and 400 meters and was a part of both the squad's 4x100 relay.
Pipion's day started in the 4x100 relay where the 'Dogs clocked a 46.25. She returned in the 400 meters with a 55.92, pacing a group of three Bulldogs to top four results. Nakyia Buckner finished behind her in second at 57.01. Again in the 200 meters, the sophomore led another group of three 'Dogs to top-three finishes. Pipion matched her season-best time of 24.69 in the win. Usually featuring in the 4x400 relay, Pipion watched on as her teammates win with a time of 3:48.23.
Also picking up a win on the track was De'ja Hudson in the 400-meter hurdles after the sophomore clocked a 1:02.32. Competing in her first steeplechase of the season, freshman Shaylee Grimm grabbed a second-place result with an 11:42.20.
Fresno State's multis were also in action on Saturday bettering several personal records. Madison Hutton grabbed a second-place finish in the high jump at 1.60m/5-2.75, and a third in the 100-meter hurdles at 14.75 while Kaja Bins placed third in the shot put with a toss of 11.61m/38-1.
The men's team earned a pair of third-place finishes in the hurdles with Garrett Ostrinski going 15.17 in the 110 and Meinkaikay Kaye with a 55.82 in the 400.
On Friday, Nadia Maffo opened up the meet with the Bulldogs' first win of the weekend in the hammer throw. The senior turned in her best performance of the season landing a mark of 62.05m/203-6.75 to earn the win by more than 30 feet. It was the third-best throw of Maffo's career behind two she landed at the 2019 ACC Championships as a member of Florida State.
Fresno State finished the meet with 17 top-three finishes.
