'Dogs drop opener to Wildcats

Fresno State (16-17) got a pair of solo home runs from Andrew Kachel and Nate Thimjon, but were held to only four more hits in the contest.
Both Kachel and Thimjon each finished with a pair of base knocks with Payton Allen and Ben Newton adding the other two.
On the mound, Zach Statzer made his second start of the season, but was unable to get out of the first inning before giving way to Will Springer, Alex Kendrick, Kyle Pruhsmeier and Tommy Hopfe.
How It Happened
The Wildcats came out on fire with a six-run first inning smacking a pair of two-run home runs and adding a two-run RBI down double by their number nine hitter, left fielder Aaron Staehely to take a 6-0 lead.
Kachel quickly got the 'Dogs to respond with a leadoff home run to right-center, his seventh of the season, but the 'Dogs could only muster a solo home run from Thimjon in the fifth the rest of the night.
After ACU scored a run in the top of the eighth to take a 7-2 lead, the 'Dogs had their final scoring opportunity of the game putting Newton and Kachel on second and third with two down in the bottom of the frame, but a strikeout ended the threat.
