FRESNO, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs used a seventh-inning home run by Zach Morgan to take a lead they would not relinquish going on to defeat Air Force, 8-6 on Saturday evening at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
With the game tied at six apiece entering the bottom of the seventh, Morgan drilled his second home run of the night adding three RBIs and a walk.
Fresno State (13-13, 7-4 MW) tallied nine more hits in the game with two coming from Josh Lauck as well as a picking up a home run from Andrew Kachel.
Jake Dixon tossed six innings in the start striking out six before giving way to Trevor Garcia who earned his second win of the season with two scoreless innings of work.
Cooper Bergman came on for the save in the ninth stranding a pair for his second save of the season.
How It Happened
The Falcons struck early with a three-run home run in the top of the first from Gabriel Garcia. The 'Dogs countered with a six-run third inning that included a two-run home run by Morgan and a solo shot from Kachel.
An RBI single in the fifth for Air Force followed by two more runs in the sixth, including one on a costly error by the 'Dogs in the field, tied the game at 6-6.
Morgan's home run in the seventh pushed the 'Dogs in front, 7-6. The Falcons nearly tied the game in the eighth when Braydon Altorfer reached base on a leadoff single and moved to third with no outs on a pair of wild pitches. Fortunately for the 'Dogs, Garcia struck out the next two Falcons and got a flyout to center to end the threat.
Ben Newton added an insurance run in the ninth coming home to score on a Tommy Hopfe RBI single and Bergman was able to work around a pair of two-out walks in the ninth to preserve the win.
