THE TOURNAMENT
Fresno State enters the 2022 Golden Coast Conference tournament as the No. 1 seed for the second consecutive year. The eight-team tournament will be hosted by Cal Baptist in Riverside, Calif. and will run April 22-24.
No. 1 Fresno State will face No. 8 Cal Baptist in the last quarterfinal matchup on Friday at 4 p.m. PT.
Pacific (12-10, 6-1) secured the No. 2 seed, Loyola Marymount comes in at No. 3 (14-11, 5-2) and San Diego State is seeded fourth (12-15, 4-3), followed by Azusa Pacific (8-15, 2-5); Santa Clara (7-19, 2-5); Concordia (9-12, 2-5) and CBU (12-16, 0-7).
Friday's winner between Fresno State and CBU will advance to face the winner between the four and five seeds, San Diego State and Azusa Pacific, in the second semifinal game on Saturday, April 23 at 4 p.m. The fifth and seventh-place games will be played on Saturday, April 23 at 10 a.m. and noon, respectively.
The tournament champion will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship Tournament.
SCOUTING THE LANCERS
CBU will host the GCC Tournament for the first time. The Lancers are 12-16 this season and 0-7 in GCC play.
CBU is averaging 11.1 goals per game. The Lancers are led by Kira O'Donell (96) and Jamie Hutton (93) with 90-plus points apiece. Goalkeeper Madison Gerg has 129 saves on a .383 percentage and 24 steals this year.
GCC PLAYER OF THE YEAR, EMILY NICHOLSON
The Auckland, New Zealand native tallied 37 goals and eight assists for 45 points. She drew a team-high 94 exclusions. Nicholson swiped 20 steals and logged four field blocks.
In conference play, she tallied four multi-goal games including three with hat tricks.
Nicholson is the first GCC Player of the Year in program history. He becomes a five-time GCC selection, the most accolades in program history. This is her second individual award as she was named the GCC Newcomer of the Year in 2018.
GCC NEWCOMER OF THE YEAR, FANNI MUZSNAY
The Budapest, Hungary native set a single-season record with 58 goals and 73 points. She also logged 15 assists, 19 drawn exclusions, 21 steals and eight field blocks.
In conference play, she had five multi-goal games including three with hat tricks. She had a season-high six goals in the 14-9 victory over then-No. 20 San Diego State.
Muzsnay is the first Bulldog to be named Newcomer of the Year since Nicholson earned the award in 2018. She is also the first to earn three GCC All-Conference honors in one season since Nicholson in 2018.
FIVE 'DOGS NAMED ALL-GCC SELECTIONS
After claiming the 2022 Golden Coast Conference regular season championship, five Bulldogs were recognized by the coaches of the league with all-conference honors, highlighted by sweeping the individual awards as Emily Nicholson and Fanni Muzsnay were named Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year, respectively.
Nicholson and Muzsnay were also tabbed First Team GCC All-Conference selections. Muzsnay completed the trifecta by earning a spot on the GCC All-Freshmen roster. Goalkeeper Paula Nieto Jasny was a Second Team GCC All-Conference honoree. Senior attacker Daphne Guevremont was named a Honorable Mention selection, and fellow attacker Brooke Ochoa rounded out the awards with a GCC All-Freshman team nod.
Fresno State led the GCC with eight total conference honors for the 2022 season.
BACK-TO-BACK CHAMPS
Fresno State claimed the 2022 Golden Coast Conference regular season championship after going a perfect 7-0 in conference play. The Bulldogs went undefeated in GCC games for the first time in program history.
Fresno State was selected as the favorite to win the title in the preseason poll.
2021 REVIEW
In just its fourth year of competition, Fresno State recorded a historic season. The Bulldogs finished the season with an overall record of 13-6 (6-1 GCC).
The Bulldogs took a piece of the Golden Coast Conference regular season championship after recording a program-best six wins in conference play, finishing in a three-way tie for first place with San Diego State and Pacific. This marked the first GCC regular season title in program history. Head Coach Natalie Benson was named the GCC Coach of the Year.
Concluding regular season play, The Bulldogs tabbed two first team, one second team and two freshman team All-GCC selections. Five is the most honorees that Fresno State has earned in program history.
Daphne Guevremont and Emily Nicholson were named All-GCC First Team honorees. Callie Woodruff earned an All-GCC Second Team nod. Kaitlin Howarth and Cynthia Rosa rounded out the Bulldogs' postseason awards. Howarth was named a GCC All-Freshman First Team selection while Rosa tallied All-Freshman Second Team honors.
Fresno State's stellar play during conference earned the team a spot in the GCC Women's Water Polo Championship, a four-team field with the top four teams earning a bid to the tournament. The Bulldogs secured the top seed in the tournament.
The 'Dogs won their first GCC Tournament Championship in program history with a 14-10 victory over the second-seeded and 13th-ranked San Diego State. Claire Schade led the Bulldogs with five points in the game, scoring a hat trick with two assists. The senior finished the tournament leading the field with eight assists and 12 points to earn Tournament MVP honors. Nicholson led all-scorers in the contest with four goals. Woodruff had a goal, an assist and a steal in the title game. Nicholson and Woodruff joined Schade on the GCC All-Tournament Team.
The Bulldogs made the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance, and earned the first NCAA Tournament win by defeating Cal Lutheran 15-7. Nicholson was named to the NCAA All-Tournament Team.
