FRESNO, Calif. – A month ago, Nadia Maffo eclipsed 63 meters for the first time since 2019. On Friday afternoon, she became the Fresno State record holder in the hammer, landing a mark of 66.56m/218-4, passing former Fresno State All-American Sharon Ayala by one inch.
In the Fresno State Invitational's opening event, the senior from Udine, Italy made a statement from the start, hitting a mark of 62.45m on her first attempt, a throw that would have won the event. She followed up with a toss of 64.12m on her second attempt. Following two more throws of at least 63 meters, Maffo let her fifth one fly for a record-breaking measurement that surpassed her previous best by more than a meter. Fresno State's record had stood since 2009.
Maffo's teammates in the finals, Hannah Chappell, Amelia DiPaola and Tahj'nee Thurston finished fifth, sixth and seventh, respectively. DiPaola landed a new PR of 59.24m/194-4.
On the men's side, while he was unable to advance through the first flight, Charles Remlinger set a new personal best of 55.61m/182-5, nearly two meters beyond his previous PR.
The Fresno State Invitational will continue at Veterans Memorial Stadium on Saturday beginning at 10 a.m. with the women's javelin. The men's 5,000 meters is scheduled to wrap up the day's action at 9:55 p.m.
