Fresno State earns the 2022 outright conference title with a 9-5 win at LMU
LOS ANGELES - The No. 8 Fresno State water polo team secured the 2022 Golden Coast Conference regular season title with a 9-5 win at LMU on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs have won 13-straight games, and carry a 16-7 (7-0 GCC) record into the conference championship tournament set for April 22-24.
Saturday's win marks the Bulldogs' first outright regular season title, but second since the program's inaugural season in 2018. Fresno State won a piece of the GCC regular season championship a season ago, finishing in a three-way tie for first place with San Diego State and Pacific.
Fanni Muzsnay led the Bulldogs with three goals. Daphne Guevremont and Sienna Jagielski added two and Brooke Ochoa netted one in the win. In the cage, Paula Nieto Jasny had 11 saves.
How it Happened
Fresno State got out to an early lead, outscoring LMU 4-3 in the opening quarter. Muzsnay striked first, evening the score at one apiece. Jagielski found Guervemont for a goal on an extra-attacker opportunity to take the lead. To follow that up, Ochoa scored her lone goal of the game on the assist from Guervemont. To close out the quarter, the Bulldogs used another goal on a power play moment with the assist from Jagielski to Guervemont.
Muzsnay fired two goals to open the second period, giving the 'Dogs a 6-3 lead at halftime.
Jagielski tabbed her first goal of the game in the third quarter. She added another goal on a power play for the Bulldogs and Ochoa converted a 5-meter attempt to finish the contest.
