Fresno State Fans, Students, Community Reduced Nearly 4,000 Pounds of Plastic Waste During Environmental Awareness Month in April.
FRESNO, Calif. — The Red Wave delivered big results in an overarching initiative by Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) to "Pitch Plastic" during baseball season in April. Collectively, Fresno State students, fans and community reduced nearly 4,000 pounds of plastic waste during the dedicated campaign.
Fresno State was one of five California universities partnering with PG&E on the new Greening California initiative which promotes environmental awareness, sustainability, and energy efficiency programs. The effort was through official Fresno State social media channels to challenge students and fans to "Pitch Plastic" during baseball season last month. Fans were asked to sign up to take a 30-day pledge designed to help live a more sustainable life and green their city by reducing or eliminating plastic use.
Fresno State's total 174 pledge takers making a concerted effort to "Pitch Plastic" within the 30-day April campaign equated to 3,654 pounds of plastic waste being reduced. According to PG&E, the average American uses and disposes of .7 pounds of plastic per day.
"We are grateful to PG&E for their leadership in this important community initiative and for their impactful partnership with Fresno State Athletics," said Frank Pucher, Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations. "Their commitment to sustainability will help further make the San Joaquin Valley a beautiful place to live, work and visit for generations to come."
According to Beth Weinman, Fresno State Associate Professor, Earth, and Environmental Sciences, "Sustainability at Fresno State is supported by collaborative work across many campus entities. These include members from a student-led Sustainability Task Force, the Sustainability Club, Associated Students Incorporated, Facilities Management, Dining Services, and Alumni Association and Athletics, The campus achieved the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (ASHE) Bronze rating in 2020 and submitted its initial United Nations Global Compact report in 2021."
She added, "The campus also has achieved an early milestone of energy-based greenhouse gas emission-reduction before the target year 2030 and is on track for attaining an AASHE Gold rating by 2025."
In addition to Fresno State, the Pitch Plastic campaign included San Jose State, University of California Berkeley, UC Davis and Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. It is part of PG&E's commitment to building a better future for the next generation of Californians.
"Each of us has a responsibility to make our world a better place and PG&E is doing our part.
