'Dogs top SJSU, 7-4 to close series

SAN JOSE, Calif. - The Diamond 'Dogs belted 17 hits on Sunday afternoon in a 7-4 victory over San Jose State in the series finale at Excite Ballpark.

Fresno State (24-24, 12-12 MW) got hits from eight different Bulldogs with Andrew Kachel, Josh Lauck, Nate Thimjon and Travis Welker each collecting three hits apiece. Kachel drove in a season-best four RBIs while Lauck and Thimjon each scored a pair of runs.

Making his first career start on the mound, Tommy Hopfe went three innings allowing five hits, three runs, two earned and struck out one.

He gave way to Nikoh Mitchell who earned his third win of the season tossing a season-high four innings and matched his season high with four strikeouts for the third time this season. Roman Angelo came on for the two-inning save allowing only one hit and struck out three for his third save.

How It Happened
After a scoreless first inning, the 'Dogs got the scoring started in the second inning with three runs. Welker got started with a bases-loaded RBI single and Kachel followed with a two-run RBI single to left for a 3-0 lead.

The Spartans answered back with a three-run frame themselves in the bottom of the inning taking advantage of a Bulldog fielding erro to score their first run and added a pair of RBI singles to tie the game at 3-3.

SJSU took its final lead of the game in the fifth with a two-out RBI single by Dalton Bowling as it was all Bulldogs from there answering back with a four-run sixth to take a 7-4 lead.

A leadoff single by Lauck followed by a walk to Payton Allen put two on base for Thimjon who doubled to left field to drive home Lauck to tie the game at four.

Welker kept the offense humming with a RBI single to left to drive in Allen and after a pitching change, Kachel gave the 'Dogs two insurance runs with a base knock to right.

Mitchell and Angelo held the Spartans off the scoreboard the rest of the afternoon as Angelo stranded two Spartans in scoring position in the eighth before a spotless ninth sealed the victory.
