Nelson Hernandez has joined the Bulldogs’ men’s basketball program as an assistant coach and recruiting coordinator.
FRESNO, Calif. – Nelson Hernandez has been hired as a Fresno State assistant men's basketball coach, head coach Justin Hutson officially announced on Friday.
Hernandez' hire completes the Bulldogs' coaching staff for the 2022-23 season and fills the role vacated by Tim Shelton, who took a job as an assistant coach at Oregon State this offseason.
"Nelson has a very sharp basketball mind and he's a relationship builder and keeper," Hutson said of Hernandez. "His recruiting contacts run all over the country and he's a coach that I've known for over a decade. He's been impactful already in the short time that he's been here and will continue to be in all facets of our program."
Hernandez – a native of Brooklyn, N.Y. – will serve as Hutson's recruiting coordinator on a veteran staff, which also includes associate head coach Tarvish Felton, assistant coach Keith Brown, director of basketball operations Nate Leal, director of player development Titus Shelton and graduate assistant Jazmin Pulido, along with director of sports performance Charles Young and associate director of sports medicine Bri Maher.
"I've known Coach Hut for years and have always thought really highly of him and his programs, and Coach Felton helped get me my start in the business," Hernandez said. "It's a family environment that I'm excited to be a part of and appreciate the opportunity. I look forward to getting to know the Fresno community. I've been in the Mountain West before and I've won a lot of games and been to the NCAA tournament many times. Coach Hut's approach to recruiting is finding tough, high-character and hard-working young men to try to help us win."
