Senior RB Jordan Mims was selected to the Doak Walker Award preseason watch list
DALLAS - Fresno State senior running back Jordan Mims was named a preseason selection to the 2022 Doak Walker Award watch list. The award is presented annually to the nation's top college running back.
Wednesday's announcement marks the first preseason FCFAA watch list recognition of Mims' career. He is one of four running backs from around the Mountain West on the preseason watch list, joining George Holani (Boise State), Titus Swen (Wyoming), and Calvin Tyler Jr. (Utah State).
Mims finished the 2021 season as the Bulldogs' second-leading rusher with 710 yards and six touchdowns on 127 carries. Mims, who spent the last few seasons as the backup to former Bulldog and current Arizona Cardinal Ronnie Rivers, ended the 2021 season as the PUBG Mobile New Mexico Bowl Offensive Most Valuable Player, finishing the game with 29 carries for 165 yards and two touchdowns with an additional five receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown.
Mims had a career-best 186 yards rushing and two touchdowns scored, leading the Bulldogs to a win at then-No. 23 San Diego State last season. Mims was named the Mountain West Offensive Player of the Week for his performance against the Aztecs, tacking onto his same honor from a week prior. He became the first Bulldog to ever record two-straight weeks as a MW Player of the Week, on either side of the ball.
The sixth-year senior from East Palo Alto, Calif. joins Rivers and Marteze Waller as the last Bulldogs to be recognized by the Doak Walker Award. Rivers had a spot on the annual preseason watch list each year from 2019-21 and Waller was a 2015 addition to the list.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced in November. The committee will cast a second vote in December to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2022 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards.
The award is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
