Haener up for Golden Arm Award
8/25/2022 9:25:00 AM | Football
BALTIMORE, Md. - The Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Educational Foundation, Inc., along with presenting sponsor A. O. Smith Corporation announced the 2022 class of Golden Arm Award candidates. Fresno State senior quarterback Jake Haener was one of 76 quarterbacks from around the nation added to the preseason watch list, the largest selections of quarterbacks in the history of the award.
Â
The preseason Watch List, semifinalists, finalists, and award recipient are selected by the distinguished Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Selection Committee, a group of prominent college football journalists, commentators, announcers, and former players. The award annually recognizes the top senior or upperclassman quarterback set to graduate with their class. Candidates are chosen based on player performance on-and-off the field as we head into the 2022 college football season.
Â
Haener joins Hank Bachmeier (Boise State), Logan Bonner (Utah State), and Braxton Burmeister (San Diego State) as representatives from the Mountain West. For more information on the preseason watch list, please visit the official website here.
In 2018, Bulldog quarterback Marcus McMaryion finished in the Top 30 in the race for the Golden Arm Award. Derek Carr was a finalist for the award in 2013, and brother David Carr was the winner in 2001.
Â
Haener passed for 4,096 yards and 33 touchdowns in 2021, leading the Bulldogs to a 10-3 record and a bowl game win a season ago. He is back for his sixth-year in 2022, with a loaded offense and veteran coaching staff under head coach Jeff Tedford.
Â
Preseason recognitions for Haener continue to roll in. Haener was named the 2022 Mountain West Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and preseason all-conference quarterback, while also receiving watch list recognitions by the Maxwell Award, Davey O'Brien Award, the Walter Camp Award and the Manning Award. He was a first team all-conference selection by Phil Steele and Athlon Sports, and was listed under the Shrine Bowl 1000. This week, Haener was also added to the watch list for the 2023 Reese's Senior Bowl.
Â
Haener and the Bulldogs kick off the 2022 season at Valley Children's Stadium in one week, hosting Cal Poly on Thursday. Sept. 1. Tickets are available here.
