Mountain West opener ends in 1-1 draw

FRESNO, Calif. – For the second straight year, Fresno State and Colorado College opened Mountain West play with a 1-1 draw, this time around at Bulldog Soccer Stadium. Like last September, the 'Dogs needed to come back after the Tigers struck first.
The Bulldogs piled up 14 shots, doubling the Tigers, while putting six on frame.
How It Happened
Fresno State was caught off guard in the opening minute as Adelaide Gaffney slipped behind the defense and caught a bit of good fortune as a pass toward the box pinged off two Bulldogs and landed in her path before she slipped a shot past Valentina Vivas.
The early goal did not phase the 'Dogs as they quickly began to mount pressure with one attack after another with three shots on frame during the next nine minutes. While none found the back of the net, Fresno State leveled in the 21st minute. On the pitch for less than four minutes, Sheyenne Hodge turned on a Megan Galvan cross, heading it inside the left post.
Less than four minutes later, Hodge was teed up for another but her header struck the left upright. The junior saw another attempt from the six in the 33rd minute drift just wide of the mark.
With momentum on the Bulldogs' side going into the half, it was Colorado College nearly regaining the lead in the first 75 seconds. Gaffney again found space but her point blank attempt was saved by Ella Wilson.
Fresno State had its best chances come midway through the half. A long ball that was crossed into the box was hooked just up and over the crossbar off the foot of Kaelyn Miller in the 69th minute. Three minutes later, a corner found Julia Hardwick on the back post but her header toward the top corner just missed the mark.
Scoring Summary
00:52 – CC – Adelaide Gaffney (Jordan Darrow)
20:01 – FS – Sheyenne Hodge (Megan Galvan, Shantay Tamez)
