'Dogs down No. 11 UC Davis, fall to No. 1 Stanford at Cal Cup

BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 9 Fresno State water polo team earned its first win of the 2023 season on Saturday at the Cal Cup defeating No. 11 UC Davis, 14-12. The Bulldogs fell to No. 1 Stanford, 25-8 later in the afternoon to close out the opening day of action.
Fresno State (1-5) was led in scoring against UC Davis by Brooke Ochoa with five goals, Daphne Guevremont added three goals and Hailey Andress tacked on a pair. Single goals came from Cynthia Rosa, Jillian Schultz, Ashley Williams and Kelsey McKenney.
Ochoa added three goals against the Cardinal with one goal apiece from Andress, Guevremont, Schultz, Kaitlin Howarth and Elisa Grim.
How It Happened vs. No. 11 UC Davis
Falling behind the Aggies, 5-1 after the opening quarter, the 'Dogs used a 7-2 run getting goals from five different 'Dogs to take an 8-7 lead.
With UCD scoring three of the next four goals to take a 10-9 lead into the fourth quarter, the Bulldogs got hot in the final frame.
The 'Dogs secured a pair of goals from Ochoa, the second one to tie the match at 11. The Aggies scored their final goal with 3:52 to play as the Bulldogs got goals from Williams, Andress and Ochoa down the stretch to surge ahead as the defense held strong to close out the victory.
How It Happened vs. No. 1 Stanford
Getting goals from Guevremont and Grim in the opening quarter, the 'Dogs only trailed by three after the first eight minutes, but a 9-3 second quarter for Stanford gave the nation's top-ranked team a 14-5 lead at halftime.
A 6-2 advantage for Stanford in the third quarter put the Cardinal ahead 20-7 and the final eight minutes of the match saw only one more goal for the 'Dogs, this time from Schultz, as Stanford cruised to the victory.
