'Dogs take down LMU on Senior Day

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 9 Fresno State water polo team (14-7, 6-0 GCC) defeated No. 16 LMU (11-13, 4-1 GCC) 10-7 on Saturday afternoon, en route to its 10th-straight win. With the win, the Bulldogs clinched at least a share of the Golden Coast Conference regular season title, and the No. 1 seed at the upcoming conference championship (April 28-30).

Fresno State and LMU were both undefeated in conference play entering Saturday's match, and LMU was picked as the preseason conference favorite. The Bulldogs had six goal-scorers and a dominant performance by Paula Nieto Jasny in the cage to defeat the Lions on Senior Day.

Freshman Hailey Andress led the 'Dogs in scoring, totaling three goals on five shots. Cynthia Rosa and Brooke Ochoa added two goals each, and Daphne Guevremont, Jillian Schultz and Kaitlin Howarth added one apiece in the win. Guevremont balanced the offense with four assists in the win.

Nieto Jasny had 12 saves and two steals against a fiery LMU offense. Twelve saves are the second-most for the keeper this season, and her most in GCC play on the year.

How it happened
LMU got out to an early 2-1 lead in the first quarter, but Fresno State responded with five goals in the second to pull ahead. The Bulldogs would outscore LMU 5-1 in the second quarter to take a 6-3 lead into the break. The 'Dogs scored two goals in the first two minutes of the period, and closed with three-straight. Nieto Jasny had four saves in the quarter, holding LMU to just one goal.

LUM answered offensively as it would even the score at 7-7 with 3:29 left in the third quarter. The Bulldogs offense got back on track, scoring two more in the final three minutes of the quarter to have a 9-7 advantage going into the final period.

The fourth quarter was a defensive battle. Fresno State would score the only goal of the quarter on a shot by Ochoa.
