'Dogs defeat Hornets in home rematch

The 'Dogs now own a 22-22 overall record while the Hornets fall to 23-22 on the season.
NOTES:
- The Fresno State pitching staff combined for 13 strikeouts.
- Bryce Armstrong was awarded his first win in 2023 and Zach Statzer earned his first save of the season.
- Tommy Hopfe now leads the Bulldogs in home runs after he crushed his eighth of the year.
- Grady Morgan led at the plate, going 4-for-5 on the night with two doubles, two RBIs and a run scored.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Starting pitcher Jaykob Acosta led off the game by pitching two consecutive three-up, three-down innings.
The 'Dogs took an early 5-0 lead with runs scoring on a sacrifice fly and error in the second, and a single from Nikoh Mitchell and Grady Morgan's first double of the night in the third.
In the top of the fourth, the Hornets scored their first run with a double followed by a sacrifice fly to bring the runner home.
The Hornets' Cesar Valero hit a solo home run in the sixth that was mirrored by a three-run bomb by Tommy Hopfe in the bottom of the inning to extend the lead to 8-2 in favor of the Diamond 'Dogs.
Sac State added another run to their total with a double and a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh, and three more with a home run to right field in the eighth.
Grady Morgan hit an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to plate Ben Newton and tack on another run for Fresno State.
Zach Statzer took the mound in the top of the ninth and struck out two batters back to back to lock in his first save of the year, and the 9-6 victory for the 'Dogs.
UP NEXT: Fresno State hits the road again this weekend to face the Nevada Wolf Pack with first pitch set for Friday at 6:35 p.m. PT.
