'Dogs close home opener weekend with two wins

FRESNO, Calif.- Fresno State women's tennis team played strong in their home opener finishing 2-1 for the weekend. Â
HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Fresno State started the weekend with back-to-back matches with the Sunbirds and the Warriors. 'Dogs made quick work with a 7-0 clean sweep against both opponents. Bulldogs also clinched the doubles point with all three opponents. The first two matches saw dominant performances from the Bulldog lineup, all singles match points only going to two sets.Â
It would be a tight matchup for the double against the Gaels on Sunday morning. No. 2 doubles pair Eliza Dunbar and Carolina Piferi were the first duo on the court to finish. No. 1 doubles Matilde Magrini and Miskai Kobayashi pulled a comeback win to take a 5-4 lead to then give the Bulldogs the double point (6-4). Gaels took the first singles point on court No. 6 Daryare def. Eliza Dunbar. Then No. 2 singles Misaki Kobayashi's win followed closely by Carolina Piferi gave the Bulldogs a two point lead. Saint Mary's responded strongly, taking the next two points, Gaels Khan defeated Matilde Magrini in the third set, 6-3. It would all come down to the final court, No. 5 singles to clinch the last point. Saint Mary's Rook defeats Hannah Pieper in the third set, 6-2.Â
UP NEXT: 'Dogs stay at the Spalding G. Wathen for the next three matches to host CSU Fullerton on February 16, followed by BYU and Cal Poly on Feb. 23 and Feb. 25.Â
