Bulldogs battle through rain to win in Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA, Calif.- Fresno State women's tennis team battled through multiple rain delays to defeat Santa Clara on Friday afternoon at Degheri Tennis Center, 4-3. Head coach Denise Dy sees her best career start to the spring season at 3-0.Â
How it happenedÂ
Looking for a way to beat the rain, both teams decided to begin with singles. Fresno State experienced two more rain delays throughout singles play and held a 3-1 lead through the first delay. Santa Clara came back to tally two more wins as singles played out. Eliza Dunbar was first on the points at court six with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Krumholz. For the first time this season a Bulldog dropped a singles match. Matilde Magrini fell to Dimitrova 6-1 in two sets in the top singles flight. Sofia Pizzoni and Paulina Montiel grabbed the next open points for the 3-1 lead.
After the first rain delay Fresno State got back on the court to resume singles play. Santa Clara took the final two singles points defeating Charlotte Gisclon (7-6) in two sets and Andjela Lopicic (5-7, 6-4, 6-3).Â
With one final point on the line, Fresno State went all in. Doubles pair Dunbar and Gisclon wrapped first with a 6-1 win over Feng/Rahman on court three. Santa Clara forced it into the hands of court two with a 6-3 win over Lopicic and Vukicevic. First time pair Magrini and Montiel played a hard set and pulled out the win over Dimitrova/Yu Dong, 6-4.Â
