12/10/2025 10:06:00 PM | Women's Basketball
MORAGA, Calif.- Fresno State fought hard in a 15-14 fourth-quarter surge that cut the deficit to a possession in the final seconds. Fresno State fell short in a wire-tight battle in the final seconds against Saint Mary's at UCU Pavilion on Wednesday night, 60-57.
Emilia Long finished the night on the verge of her fourth twenty-point game totaling 19 points, to lead the field, and totaled seven steals, four assists and four rebounds. Ava Marr followed with ten points, two 3PFG and two steals.Â
How it happenedÂ
Gaels claimed the first three baskets of the game but the Bulldogs worked to get within five, 12-7 after buckets from Avery Watkins, Danae Powell and Jaisa Gamble. Ava Marr inched the 'Dogs closer with her first three-pointer of the night. Both parties missed the basket for a three minute chunk. Long's final five points had the Bulldogs sit within two after the first ten, 19-17.Â
Fresno State held the lead for the first minutes after the 'Dogs opened on a 7-4 run. Gamble contributed five points on that run. Gamble's three was the first edge over the Gaels, 21-20. Saint Mary's responded with a 6-0 run, but it wasn't enough to build a substantial lead. Bulldogs fought back to get within a possession after Marr's 2-of-2 appearance at the line and a layup from Gamble, 29-28.Â
Long was the first Bulldog to hit double figures, her sixth time this season, with two solid shots from the line. Gaels held a six-point advantage before Djessira Diawara cut it down on a solo 4-0 run. Powell tied it up on a jumper but The Gales responded only for Hedda Koehne to knot it up again, 40-40.Â
Fresno State held the Gaels scoreless for three minutes. Diawara claimed the first basket for the 'Dogs in the fourth. Long matched it with a fast break layup. It was tight scoring on both ends of the court in the final period. Bulldogs had another close reach at the lead after a jumper from Long, 55-53, but Gaels responded on a fast break layup. Marr's next trip to the line was a good 2-of-3 to get back within three on 18 seconds left. Marr cashed in a deep three as the final ten seconds winded down, 59-57. A foul to follow sent the Gaels to the line (1-1) to close the game, 60-57.Â
