Thirteen Bulldogs score in win over FPU, 'Dogs dominate in exhibition

FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 7 Fresno State water polo team defeated Fresno Pacific 23-6 in the Bulldog Mini, hosted at the Aquatics Center on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs also defeated the University of Redlands in an exhibition game, 19-1.

Thirteen of the Bulldogs' 18 field players who saw action scored at least once in the win over FPU. Fresno State was led by senior Brooke Ochoa with five goals on six shots. Hailey Andress, Marit van der Kolk, Abbey Simshauser, Ella Simone, Alexandra Schow and Aryanah Tellez each had two goals apiece. Alice Johnson, Megan Cranley, Ashley Williams, Marley Garwick, Isabella Landeros and Hannah Tully-Giles scored one goal each. Simone dished a team-high four assists, leading the team with six points.

Abigayle Armstrong got her first start of the season, recording two saves and an assist in 16 minutes of play. Ida Tully-Giles and Islay Martin-Hill split the second half, each allowing one goal.

The Bulldogs got out to a 3-0 lead behind starters Williams, Simshauser and Andress. Ochoa and Simone extended the lead to 5-1 before FPU scored its second of the game. Fresno State scored back-to-back goals to close out the first with a 7-1 lead.

Fresno State drew two penalties to open the second quarter, and while Andress saw her shot attempt denied, Simshauser found the back of the net to extend the lead. FPU killed the streak but the Bulldogs outscored the Sunbirds 3-1 to close out the half with a 11-4 lead.

The 'Dogs opened the third quarter with three-straight goals, including the first of the season for Johnson. FPU scored its fifth goal of the game with 4:27 left in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs responded with four in-a-row to wrap up the third quarter. In that four-goal run, the Bulldogs saw season-first scores by Tellez and Landeros.

Fresno State held the Sunbirds scoreless until the final minute of the fourth quarter, outscoring the visitors 5-1. Freshmen Garwick and Schow added scores, along with more from Tellez and H. Tully-Giles.

vs Redlands (exhibition)
Playing most of its rotational players, the Bulldogs saw 10 different goal-scorers in the exhibition with Redlands while also seeing minutes out of all three available goalkeepers.

Aryanah Tellez led the team with a career-best four goals. Sidney Strickland and Marley Garwick had three goals each. Caitlyn Mossman and Hannah Tully-Giles scored two apiece, and Ella Simone, Alexandra Schow, Megan Cranley, Susanna Martinez, and Isabella Landeros scored one each.
