Bulldogs drop season series to Falcons

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's basketball team dropped their final regular season meeting with Air Force in a buzzer beater attempt on Saturday afternoon at the Save Mart Center, 67-66.Â
How it happened
Fresno State held the lead for two minutes after the opening sixty seconds on a 5-0 run. Mariah Elohim opened the scoring for the 'Dogs on a deep three followed by Saga Ukkonen with a jumper. Mia Jacobs handed one more basket, that would be the Bulldogs final lead of the game. Air Force's McNabb started a 14-0 scoring run to take a hold of the lead for the remainder of the game. Jacobs got the ball back moving on an and-1 for the additional three points. Danae Powell joined for another basket on a 5-0 spurt.Â
Avery Watkins, Rayna Williams and Taija Sta. Maria came up off the bench to put up half of the period's points (7). Watkins got the better end of an and-1 rallying up another three points. Sta. Maria ended the first half on a 2-of-2 trip to the line to sit within four, 32-28.Â
Fresno State played a stronger second half backed by 38 points. Coming out of the half, Bulldogs scored 21 points with three three-pointers from Ukkonen, Elohim and Kylee Fox. Bulldogs' worked down the Falcons largest lead of 12 to six in the last two minutes on a 7-0 spurt. Jacobs shot the usual 2-of-2 from the charity stripe, joined by a fast break from Powell off a steal and Ukkonen closed on another deep three.Â
'Dogs 17-12 final quarter was the final push at grabbing the lead back. Bulldogs' managed to get within one of the Falcons three times within a seven minute span of play. Air Force built back to six before Fresno State got back within one. Ukkonen put up back-to-back three's shy of the lead by two. Falcons Smith's 1-of-1 trip eased the 'Dogs in the final minute. Sta. Maria's layup put the Bulldogs in a one possession game with forty seconds on the clock. Falcons shot clock violation handed the ball back to Fresno with seven seconds. Ukkonen's buzzer beater shot from beyond the arc hit net, 67-66.Â
