FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 6 Fresno State equestrian team fell 11-9 to No. 8 South Carolina on Saturday at the Student Horse Center. The loss ended Fresno State's four-meet winning streak, and was the first loss of the spring for the Bulldogs.
Â
Similar to the meet results, Fresno State rode strong in the western events and swept both western Most Outstanding Performer honors. Senior Kendra Lee earned the horsemanship honor and junior Brogan Hill earned the award in the reining.
Â
Fresno State honored seven seniors at the conclusion of the meet - Kendra Lee, Shelby Robinette, Yasmin Roman, Colby Sayles, Jillian Spencer, Ella Storch, and Courtney Wlasiuk.
Â
How it Happened
Fresno State and South Carolina were tied through the first half of events, but it was a tale of two events. The Bulldogs took the horsemanship with a dominant 4-1 showing, but the Gamecocks took the fences 4-1 themselves to even the score.Â
Â
In the horsemanship, Fresno State opened the event with a 76 from freshman Hailey Olson who rode against a 75 from South Carolina. Seniors Ella Storch and Kendra Lee also earned their points. Lee earned the MOP with a 75.5, her fourth win in a row and second-straight MOP ride. Aubrey Gerdes was granted the point after a video review and a score of 68.5.
Â
In the jumping seat event, South Carolina earned four of the five points. Fresno State's lone point came from Molly Stewart with a career-high 88, going up against the Gamecock's 85 from the first rotation of rides. Bulldog freshman Paloma Primavera got the luck of the draw on Saturday, and was matched with her older sister Bella Primavera in the fences. Bella came away with a narrow 82-80 ride.
Â
South Carolina controlled the flat, taking the event 4-1. Stewart again rode strong, securing another career-high with an 88 in her second event.
Â
In the reining, Alana Becker earned the first point with a 70-68 ride. South Carolina won the following two points before the Bulldogs closed out with back-to-back points by Hill and Alison Heupel. Hill earned her second MOP of the season with a season-high 72.
Â
