'Dogs pull off upset win over Nevada on Senior Day

FRESNO, Calif. - The Fresno State women's tennis team defeated No. 70 Nevada on Friday afternoon at the Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Complex, 4-3. Prior to the match, the Bulldogs celebrated seniors Charlotte Gisclon, Matilde Magrini and Yinglak Jittakoat.Â
How it happened
Nevada jumped out to early leads in all three of the doubles matches. On court 3, Nevada secured the first doubles match after Sofia Pizzoni and Paulina Montiel were defeated by Foerster/Costache six games to one. Amahee Charrier and Kennedy Robinson followed suit as they defeated Gisclon/Vukicevic six games to two, securing the doubles point for Nevada
With Nevada holding a 1-0 lead after doubles, the 'Dogs bounced back early in singles play thanks to Sofia Pizzoni's impressive play on court 3 where she defeated Lou Anne Guerbert in two sets (6-2 ,6-3), With the match tied at one game a piece, Nevada answered on court four as Silvia Maria Costache gave Nevada a 2-1 lead with a win against Charlotte Gisclon in two sets (6-2, 6-4). Amahee Charrier doubled Nevada's lead following her victory over Matilde Magrini on court 1 in three sets (6-4, 4-6, 6-2).Â
Trailing three games to one, Yinglak Jittakoat secured the 'Dogs second victory of the afternoon, outlasting Marlene Foerster in three close sets (5-7, 7-5, 7-5). On court 5, Andjela Lopicic battled with Wiem Boubaker as each took one of the first two sets by a score of 6-4 before Lopicic took the match in the third set in decisive fashion, 6-0. Â
WIth Nevada and Fresno State tied 3-3, Paulina Montiel looked to secure the win for the 'Dogs on court 6 against Kennedy Robinson. After being tied after two sets (5-7, 6-3), Montiel held a 5-3 lead in the final set before Robinson stormed back to take a 6-5 lead, looking to secure the match for Nevada. While remaining composed, Montiel evened the scoring at 6-6, forcing a 7 point tiebreaker where Montiel eventually prevailed and helped secure a 4-3 victory for the 'Dogs on Senior Day.Â
