'Dogs earn first-round bye with extra innings win
5/16/2025 8:28:00 PM | Baseball
Fresno State is the first team to win a series against New Mexico at home in 2025 and now owns a 28-26 record (18-11 MW).
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bulldogs and Lobos were at a stalemate for the first two innings of the game. Sky Collins walked to lead off the third inning and was driven in by a line drive double from Griffen Sotomayor to left center.
The Lobos put a string of four hits together in the bottom of the third, scoring three runs to take the lead. They extended their lead in the following frame with an RBI double that added a run.
In the following two innings, Eddie Saldivar and Bobby Blandford slugged the Bulldogs into a tie game with a two-run homer and a solo shot.
A wild pitch in the sixth and a solo home run in the seventh put the Lobos back in front, 6-4.
Blandford doubled to left center to kick off the eighth inning. Lee Trevino capitalized on the opportunity in front of him with a runner in scoring position and singled to send Blandford home. Collins followed with his second triple of the series to score Trevino.
The Lobos regained their lead in the bottom of the inning, scoring a run with an RBI single.
With their backs against the wall, the Bulldogs were down to their final out when Owen Faust was called to pinch hit with two runners on. He singled to center field, allowing both runners to score and tie the game and send the game to extras.
Collins was the first runner aboard in the 10th after a double down the left line, followed by Sotomayor, who reached first on a full-count walk. Saldivar doubled to the same spot in the left field corner, scoring both runners and giving Fresno State a two-run lead.
The lead was quickly diminished by the Lobos, who tied the game again with a two-run homer.
Fresno State reached the 11th inning for the first time in 2025 and quickly got two runners on in Blandford and Faust. Jett Ruby grounded out to the Lobo second baseman, allowing both runners to advance. Lee Trevino delivered again for the Bulldogs, singling to second base and giving the Bulldogs another two-run lead.
New Mexico attempted another rally as they came within one run after a solo shot to start the bottom of the inning. Fresno State's JT Guerrero stayed relentless on the mound and retired the next three batters to finalize the 11-10 victory over the Lobos.
