'Dogs open conference play with win over Nevada

RENO, Nev. - Fresno State's three unanswered goals in the first half were enough as the Bulldogs opened conference play by defeating Nevada on Thursday by a final score of 3-0 at Mackay Stadium.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Nevada came out on the attack early, registering three shots on goal in the opening five minutes of the match. Shivani Battaglia stayed composed in net as the senior goalie stopped all three shots for Fresno State to keep the game level.
In search of the opening goal, Fresno State was awarded a free kick inside the goal box in the 20th minute after a handball by Nevada. Alexis Campbell found Anaya Shelton on the other side of the net off the free kick for a tap–in goal to put the 'Dogs in front 1-0. It was Shelton's second goal in as many games.Â
Fresno State doubled their lead five minutes later after taking advantage of their second corner kick of the night. Katie Morris sent a shot towards a crowd of Bulldogs in front of the net, as Laura Mas Serra settled the ball before beating the goalie with a shot to the bottom right of the net, extending the Bulldogs lead to 2-0.
With under five to go in the half, Fresno State made it three unanswered goals after Alexis Campbell sent a strike from the top of the box past the Wolf Pack goalie to give the 'Dogs a three goal advantage heading into halftime.
Fresno State continued to negate Nevada's opportunities in the offensive zone, demonstrating their ability to maintain possession while continuing to produce scoring chances of their own. The Bulldogs threatened to increase their lead with chances by Tiana Beavers and Sam Paepen in the 71st and 72nd minute, but the Nevada netminder kept the Bulldogs from adding a fourth goal on the night.
Shivani Battaglia made two last stops in closing minutes of the contest to preserve her second shutout of the season, as Fresno State would kickoff conference play with a 3-0 victory over Nevada.Â
