'Dogs defeat Spartans in overtime thriller
1/18/2026 4:18:00 PM | Water Polo
FRESNO, Calif. - The No. 7 Fresno State water polo team closed out Polopalooza with a 15-14 overtime win against No. 12 San Jose State on Sunday afternoon at the Aquatics Center.
Freshman Charli Muñoz was one of five Bulldogs with two goals on Sunday, but both her goals came in overtime to give the 'Dogs the win. Hailey Andress, Marit van der Kolk, Susanna Martinez and Sidney Strickland each tallied two goals. Riaan Bryant, Alice Johnson, Megan Cranley, Noa Markovsky and Kira Anderson each added one to round out the scoring.
In the cage, Katelyn Mobley had 10 saves and two steals including a big-time save in overtime.
How it happened
The Bulldogs scored first behind a goal from van der Kolk and an assist from Martinez. San Jose State evened the score with a penalty shot but on the Bulldogs' next possession Munoz found Strickland to put Fresno State up 2-1. San Jose State's Darcy Spark scored the equalizer on a 6-on-5 advantage with 2:21 left in the opening period. It didn't take long for the Bulldogs to regain the lead as van der Kolk scored her second of the period with 1:58 left. The teams traded goals to end the quarter as van der Kolk found Johnson as the Bulldogs led 4-3 after one.
The Spartans struck first in the second quarter, but Anderson converted her penalty shot attempt to keep the lead. Mobley came up with a big save off a shot attempt by Spark, and the Bulldogs' counterattack was successful by a goal from Cranley. A minute later, Spark had a penalty attempt of her own to cut the lead back to one, 6-5, with 4:16 left before halftime. Andress responded with a Bulldog goal shortly after, but Spark scored again on the next Spartan possession. The back-and-forth battle left it a 7-6 game in favor of Fresno State with 3:29 left to go before halftime. Bryant, Strickland and Martinez closed out the half with goals of their own while SJSU added a pair. The Bulldogs led 10-8 at halftime.
The third quarter was a defensive battle by both teams with San Jose State scoring the only goal of the quarter. The Bulldogs saw four shot attempts knocked away by Spartan keeper Tatianna Raffin while Mobley had two of her own.
Spark tied the game at 10 on the first possession of the fourth quarter. Following a Spartan exclusion drawn by Caitlyn Mossman, freshman Markovsky scored her first collegiate goal on the 6-on-5 advantage. Twenty seconds later Rose Jensen tied the game again. The Bulldogs took two shots that were stopped and San Jose State took the lead after another goal by Spark with 4:10 left to go.
Markovsky drew a penalty foul at center, and Andress converted the shot to erase the lead. Spark took two shots that were turned away by Mobley, and the Spartans were later called on an exclusion drawn by Georgia Daly. After a Bulldog timeout, Charley Stephens hit Martinez for a goal to put the Bulldogs up 13-12 with 1:57 left in regulation. San Jose State scored with 55 seconds left to tie the game at 13. The Bulldogs took two final shots in the last minute of play, but neither were on target.
After a scoreless first overtime period, Markovsky found Muñoz to put Fresno State ahead with 54 seconds left in the second overtime, taking advantage of a 6-on-5 opportunity. With just under 30 seconds to go, the Spartans did the same and tied the game again. Working the ball on its final possession, Fresno State nearly was about to head into a sudden death overtime before Cranley found Muñoz on the far side who fired in the game-winner at the buzzer.
