Bulldogs go 1-1 to open Brigitte Donner Daws Memorial Invite
1/24/2026 5:45:00 PM | Water Polo
BERKELEY, Calif. - The No. 9 Fresno State water polo team wrapped up the first day of action at the Brigitte Donner Daws Memorial Invite with a 10-8 win over No. 12 San Jose State and a 15-11 loss to No. 4 Cal on Saturday.
Hailey Andress led the team with six goals in the two games, while Riaan Bryant totaled five goals on the day. Six players scored goals in the game against Cal and five tallied scored against San Jose State. In the cage, freshman Katelyn Mobley played two complete games and totaled 16 saves.
The Bulldogs saw a rematch with San Jose State after defeating them in overtime in the final game of the Polopalooza -- the last time the 'Dogs were in the pool. The Bulldogs extended their win streak to seven in the series with the Spartans. In game two, the Bulldogs saw their closest true road game against Cal since 2019.
Game 1 Recap - vs No. 12 San Jose State
This go-around with the Spartans was much different than the first as the Bulldogs pulled off a 10-8 victory in their first game of the afternoon. Riaan Bryant struck first off the assist from Marit van der Kolk, but the Spartans evened the score quickly after. San Jose State goalie Tatianna Raffin came up with two big saves before the Bulldogs were able to get another goal across, this time from Hailey Andress with 4:17 left in the opening period. The 'Dogs added another goal as freshman Charley Stephens found fellow classmate Katya Aleshina to put Fresno State up 3-1 with 2:36 on the clock. SJSU's Darcy Spark scored a pair of goals, including one penalty shot, to close out the first quarter with the teams tied at three.
The second quarter was a defensive battle as the teams would take that 3-3 tie into halftime. Fresno State saw seven shots miss the cage or knocked down before crossing in, in the period. On the defensive end, Katelyn Mobley grabbed three saves and the field players picked up an additional field block in the eight minute period.
After nearly 10 minutes of scoreless clock time, Sidney Strickland ended the drought on a heads-up rebound play on a 6-on-5 opportunity. Georgia Daly kicked a pass out to Charley Stephens for another Bulldog goal, extending the lead back out to two goals. Fresno State would hold on to at least a two-goal advantage for the remainder of the game. Mobley came up with another save, and passed the ball ahead to Bryant who found Andress up top for the untested goal from far out to put the 'Dogs up 6-3 with 3:33 left in the third quarter and force a Spartan timeout.
San Jose State scored following the timeout, but the Bulldogs responded with another goal from Andress. Katya Aleshina scored once more before the end of the third with the assist from Bryant on a 6-on-5 chance, putting Fresno State ahead 8-4 heading into the fourth.
Bryant opened scoring on the first possession in the fourth, but Spark tallied another for the Spartans in response. Andress stayed hot with a score on the Bulldogs' next possession. The teams went another two minutes without a goal before San Jose State scored on a 6-on-4 chance with two Bulldogs excluded. The Spartans added two more goals to close out the game but couldn't close the gap the Bulldogs grew from the third.
Game 2 Recap - vs No. 4 Cal
Fresno State struck first with a quick goal on the opening possession by Kira Anderson, but Cal responded with a goal on its next possession to even things at one. Riaan Bryant scored her first of the game with 6:15 remaining in the first quarter but the Bears again responded to even the score. Bryant kept firing, scoring again to put the Bulldogs ahead by one mid-way through the first but Fresno State's offense fell stagnant after that while surrendering four goals to the Bears to end the first down 6-3.
Cal scored two unanswered to open the second period before Hailey Andress ended the Bulldogs' drought off the assist from Sidney Strickland. On its next offensive attack, Cal answered with another goal of its own to make it a 9-4 game with 4:20 left before halftime. Ashley Williams and Bryant added a pair of goals each to close the half down 9-6.
Cal extended its lead with a goal from a penalty shot with 6:09 left in the third. The Bears added another, extending the lead to five with 5:26 left. The Bears tacked on another three unanswered for a 14-6 lead at the end of the third.
Fresno State got into an offensive rhythm in the fourth, scoring first by Caitlyn Mossman then later by Anderson to cut the Cal lead to 14-8 with 5:33 left in the game. Cal added just one more goal, while the Bulldogs scored three from Andress, Williams and Stephens in the final three minutes of play time. Stephens tacked on the final goal at the buzzer, but the Bulldogs' comeback attempt fell short on Saturday.
