Runners make moves to Top 10 lists on Friday

RENO, Nev. - The Fresno State track and field team competed at the Battle Born Classic on Friday.

Maria Lawson started the day off with a fourth place finish in the weight throw, continuing her run of Top 5 finishes this season. Lawson threw for a mark of 17.58m/57-8.25 on her second attempt. She was behind in the standings by two athletes from Cal and one from Wyoming.

In the long jump, Madison Hutton led the Bulldogs with a 10th place finish and a jump of 5.80m/19-0.5. Janae Heffernan and Kyndall Hannible finished 12th and 13th, respectively. Heffernan had a jump of 5.78m/18-11.75 while Hannible had a jump of 5.77m/18-11.25. Matilde Guarino placed 16th with a jump of 5.69m/18-8. Laynee Sims rounded out the Bulldog jumpers with a 5.36m/17-7 mark, finishing 29th.

Itzia Mejia Garcia had a personal best time in the 60m run, leading the Bulldogs with a time of 7.51. Her time now puts her second all-time, and is the fastest time by a Bulldog since 2014.

In the 60m hurdles preliminaries, Hutton took 15th with a time of 8.77, her second-fastest time of the season. Breelyn Newsome had a personal-best time of 8.90, placing 22nd. Samarra Blake also had a season-best time of 9.59, as did Tiana Osuna with a time of 9.63.

SEATTLE, Wash. - The Bulldog distance runners competed at the Husky Classic in Seattle on Friday.

A pair of Bulldogs ran in the women's 3,000 as Chiara Pedol led the way with a time of 9:52.15. She had a season-best time on Friday. Rhiannon Walker added her name to another Top 10 list, running in a time of 10:00.28, the fifth fastest time in program history. Walker is just behind Pedol on the list who had her best mark in the event last season.
Up Next: Fresno State will complete action at both meets on Saturday.
