FRESNO, Calif. – The Fresno State baseball team dropped a 5-4 decision to Utah on Valentine's Day at Pete Beiden Field at Bob Bennett Stadium.
The Bulldogs' offense was highlighted by ten total hits, four from newcomers to the roster. Fresno State pitchers struck out five batters and walked only one batter.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Sophomore Tyler Patrick made his first career weekend start for the Bulldogs and retired the Utes in order in the top of the first. Cayden Munster and Cam Schneider recorded the first two hits of the game, back-to-back singles, in the bottom of the frame.
Utah got on the board with a four-run second inning. With two outs, an RBI double gave Utah a 2-0 advantage. The Utes continued their scoring run with three consecutive singles that drove in another pair of runs.
Fresno State cut its deficit in the bottom of the third. Brady Hewitt singled to right field, and Owen Faust singled to left. Griffen Sotomayor hit a double to right field, allowing Hewitt to score and Faust to advance to third. Schneider grounded out to the third baseman, giving Faust the opportunity to score.
After two scoreless innings, Utah extended its lead in the sixth. Fresno State retired the first two batters, but a fielding error by Hewitt allowed Utah to get a runner on first. The next batter hit a triple to deep left field, making it a 5-3 game.
The Bulldogs chipped away at the Utah lead in the bottom of the inning, mimicking the previous scoring sequence by the Utes in the frame prior. Barclay Ovalle reached first on a throwing error by the Utah second baseman and was sent home by Marcus Nolen's first career triple.
BJ Rodriguez took the mound for the Bulldogs in the seventh inning and kept the Utes at bay for three scoreless innings. Fresno State was also held scoreless for the final three frames, locking in the 5-4 win for Utah.
