Fresno State was led at the plate by sophomore Owen Faust, who recorded two hits and four runs. Victor Arreola was the starting pitcher for the Bulldogs and pitched four hitless innings.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Utah took an early 1–0 lead. The leadoff hitter drew a walk, stole second, and advanced to third on a throwing error by the catcher. With one out, the run scored on a fielder's choice that resulted in another error, allowing everyone to reach safely. The Bulldogs' defense recorded the next two outs to limit the damage.
Fresno State's offense exploded in the bottom of the inning, beginning with back-to-back singles from Owen Faust and Jett Ruby. Griffen Sotomayer drew a walk to load the bases, and Cayden Munster followed with another walk to bring home the tying run. A fielder's choice gave the Bulldogs the lead, and Sky Collins made it 3–1 with a single down the right-field line. Another walk loaded the bases for Marcus Nolen, who delivered a two-RBI single to left.
With two outs, Fresno State turned the lineup over. Faust was hit by a pitch to reload the bases, and Ruby reached on a fielder's choice that plated two more runs. An error by the third baseman brought in the eighth run of the inning. The Bulldogs added one more when a runner caught in a rundown allowed the runner at third to steal home. Fresno State held a 9–1 lead after one inning.
Fresno State continued its scoring streak in the third. With runners on first and second, Jett Ruby and Griffen Sotomayor hit consecutive singles that drove in two runs.
Freshman Brady Hewitt hit his first collegiate home run to open the fifth inning, a solo shot to deep left field. Cam Schneider tacked on another run for the Bulldogs, a sacrifice fly that scored Faust.
Utah recorded its first hit of the afternoon in the top of the seventh inning. Back-to-back doubles gave the Utes a pair of runs. Fresno State extended its lead in the bottom half of the seventh with Mikey Pickett's first collegiate hit that scored Sotomayor and extended the Bulldog lead to 11.
The Utes had an explosive eighth inning and scored five runs on four hits, highlighted by a two-RBI triple down the right field line. Despite the late surge for Utah, Fresno State held on to its six-run lead and secured its first win of 2026.
NOTES
