'Dogs earn 21-7 win in GCC opener

SANTA CLARA, Calif. - The No. 13 Fresno State water polo team opened Golden Coast Conference play with a 21-7 win over Santa Clara on Saturday afternoon. The Bulldogs improve to 10-7 overall. The Bulldogs won their seventh-straight conference opener.
Hailey Andress led the scoring efforts with four goals on Saturday. Sidney Strickland scored three goals, Georgia Daly and Katya Aleshina scored two each, while Marit van der Kolk, Charley Stephens, Riaan Bryant, Caitlyn Mossman, Megan Cranley, Susanna Martinez, Ashley Williams, Noa Markovsky and Kira Anderson added one apiece.
Alice Johnson spread the offense with four assists.
Defensively, freshman Katelyn Mobley had 10 saves in 22 minutes of play.
How it Happened
Fresno State scored six unanswered to start the game, kickstarted by Ashley Williams. The Broncos scored their first goal of the game with 31 seconds left in the first quarter. The Bulldogs took a demanding 6-1 lead into the second quarter. Fresno State tacked on two more from Hailey Andress and Sidney Strickland, extending the lead. Santa Clara added its second goal on a 6-on-5 opportunity, and scored another as the Bulldogs led 8-3 at halftime.
Fresno State opened the second half with five unanswered goals, sparked by two from Andress. The Broncos got one across with 3:58 left in the third quarter, but the 'Dogs closed out the period with three more including a pair from Katya Aleshina. Fresno State had a 16-4 lead headed into the final quarter.
Susanna Martinez and Marit van der Kolk scored for the Bulldogs to open the fourth, and Santa Clara tacked one on midway through. The teams traded goals to end the game as the Bulldogs had a final possession goal by Noa Markovsy on a 6-on-5 chance.
